Murudeshwar Temple Overview & History
Surrounded on three sides by the Arabian Sea atop Kanduka Hill, the Murudeshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva (Sri Mridesha Linga). According to legend from the Ramayana, the demon king Ravana obtained the sacred Atma-Linga from Lord Shiva. When tricked by Lord Ganesha to place it on the ground at Gokarna, Ravana attempted to uproot it in anger. A piece of the cloth covering the Linga was flung across the coast, landing at Kanduka Hill, which became the sacred site of Murudeshwar.

2. The 249-Foot Raja Gopura (20-Storied Tower)
- One of the tallest temple gopurams in India. It is equipped with a modern elevator (lift fee approx. ₹10 per person) taking visitors directly to the 18th floor. Large glass viewing windows offer a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic vista of the Arabian Sea, Murudeshwar Beach, and the Shiva statue.
3. Bhukailasa Cave Museum
- Located directly beneath the Shiva statue, this air-conditioned cave museum showcases life-size stone and plaster sculptures depicting the mythological legend of the Atma-Linga and Ravana. (Entry fee approx. ₹20).
