Road Trip: The Scenic Driving Route via NH 66
Driving from Gokarna to Murudeshwar is straightforward and enjoyable. The route entirely follows National Highway 66 (NH 66), which has been upgraded to a broad, well-signposted, four-lane highway. The journey takes you past lush green fields, coconut groves, and offers dramatic crossings over several massive rivers as they drain into the Arabian Sea.
The Driving Route:
Gokarna Town -> Madangeri (Highway Entry) -> Kumta -> Honnavar -> Manki -> Murudeshwar Arch -> Temple Road
- Driving Time: Approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes of active driving.
- Route Description: Leave Gokarna town via the Gokarna-Madangeri road. At the Madangeri junction, turn right to merge onto NH 66 heading south. You will drive past Kumta town and Honnavar town. After crossing the long Sharavati River bridge in Honnavar, continue south for another 25 kilometers, then turn right at the iconic Murudeshwar Temple Entrance Arch onto Temple Road, which leads directly to the beach and temple.
- Road Conditions: The tarmac is in excellent condition, allowing a comfortable cruising speed of 80 km/h. There are a few sections near towns where pedestrians and local traffic slow down the flow. Keep a lookout for local auto-rickshaws and two-wheelers merging onto the highway.
Breathtaking Scenic Stopovers Along the Way
Instead of rushing straight from Gokarna to Murudeshwar, we highly recommend making a few stops. The route between these two towns features some of coastal Karnataka’s most famous natural and heritage attractions.
1. Mirjan Fort (Kumta)
Located just 22 kilometers south of Gokarna and about a 5-minute detour from NH 66, Mirjan Fort is a double-walled medieval fortress built of laterite stones. Dating back to the 16th century, the fort was a major trading hub for black pepper, saltpetre, and spices. It was famously ruled by Queen Chennabhairadevi, whom Portuguese merchants named the "Pepper Queen" due to her monopoly on the spice trade.
The fort features circular watchtowers, high bastions, deep open wells, and secret escape passages. During the monsoon and immediate post-monsoon months (July to October), the entire fort is covered in a carpet of thick green moss, making it look like a castle out of a fairy tale. Visiting the fort is free, and exploring the walls takes about 45 to 60 minutes.
2. Kasarkod Eco Beach (Honnavar)
Located just before entering Honnavar town, Kasarkod Eco Beach is one of the few beaches in India to receive the prestigious Blue Flag certification for environmental safety and cleanliness. The beach has a beautifully manicured garden park, clean tiled walking tracks, changing rooms, and children's play areas. It is an ideal spot for a quiet stroll along a clean, white-sand shoreline that is free from commercial clutter.
3. Honnavar Mangrove Walkway (Sharavati Backwaters)
Situated close to Kasarkod, this eco-tourism park is a unique attraction. The local forest department has built a long wooden boardwalk that cuts directly through a dense mangrove swamp growing along the tidal backwaters of the Sharavati River. Walking along the boardwalk, you are surrounded by the roots of mangrove trees, and you can observe local crabs, mudskippers, and a variety of resident and migratory waterbirds. Entry is ₹10 per person, and the walk takes about 30 to 40 minutes.
4. Apsarakonda Waterfall and Hilltop Park
A few kilometers south of Honnavar lies Apsarakonda (meaning "Pond of Angels"). A short walk from the parking lot leads to a small, scenic waterfall that flows down a rocky cliff into a natural pond. Legend says that celestial angels used to descend here to bathe. Next to the waterfall is a manicured hilltop park facing the Arabian Sea. From the edge of the hill, you can get a spectacular, bird’s-eye view of the coastline and watch the sun set directly over the ocean.
5. Idagunji Maha Ganapathi Temple
For a spiritual detour, turn off the highway near Honnavar and drive 5 km inland to the sacred village of Idagunji. This historic temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, is over 1,500 years old. The unique black-stone deity has only two arms, holding a modak in one hand and a lotus bud in the other. It is one of the most revered temples in the region, and visiting offers a peaceful, spiritual pause to your road trip.
